Movement
Active Arcade
Kids jump, duck, dodge and dance through camera-powered games where their body acts as the controller.
Active Arcade sets out to turn a phone or tablet into a motion-game console without extra gear. The device gets propped up, the player steps back, and the camera follows their movements, so jumping, ducking, reaching and running in place drive the action. The games range from quick reaction rounds – popping bubbles, dodging obstacles – to rhythm games that set moves to music, adventure games, and silly party games made for a family to take turns. Rounds look short, which could make it a handy fit for a wet afternoon or a quick energy release after school. Only a small patch of floor appears necessary, and the screen can be mirrored to a TV so everyone watches. Grown-ups often seem to end up joining in.
