Storybooks Canada

Storybooks Canada offers illustrated stories with text and audio in English, French and many immigrant and refugee languages.

The stories come from African Storybook and are grouped by reading level, from short level-one tales to longer narratives. Since each story exists in many languages, a child can hear it in a home language and then again in a language they are learning. Animal characters, folktales and everyday scenes all turn up.

What kids do

  • Pick a story by level
  • Listen to the narration
  • Compare two language versions
  • Read an African folktale

Who it suits

Meant for early readers and multilingual families. The levels describe the text rather than an age, so an older child new to a language might start low.

Notes for parents

Text and audio sit side by side on every story. Some of the longer ones touch on bigger topics a family may want to talk through.
