MakeBeliefsComix

Kids build comic strips from ready-made characters, speech bubbles and story prompts.

MakeBeliefsComix is an online comic strip maker created by author Bill Zimmerman. Kids choose a panel layout, pick from a large cast of characters in different moods and poses, add props and backgrounds, and type words into speech and thought bubbles. Since the drawing is already done, the work shifts almost entirely to storytelling, which may appeal to kids who freeze at a blank page. A big library of comic starters and themed prompts, from pet tales to escape adventures, offers a way in. Away from the screen, the site has printable prompt pages, write-in PDFs, sock puppet play and journaling ebooks. Comics can be printed or shared once finished. A Spanish version and resources for English language learners suggest it could serve kids picking up a second language. Young artists who love drawing their own characters may miss that part.
